Yes. I watched all the first 5 Disney movies from the era of the golden age. (1937-1942).
This era was really interesting. The animation is definitely memorable in this era and it's by far the best in terms of its aesthetics like backgrounds and color palette.
So what you will all expect, I will rank all of these from Worst to Best.
Let's get started with my least favorite.
5
Fantasia (1940)
Yeah. Kinda shocking isn't it? Alot of people say that this is the best from the golden age era, but to me this felt like the least enjoyable out of the bunch. This isn't bad by all means, I think this movie is really good, but it's not one I would want to experience again. I did think some of the segments didn't fit my watch style, but it still has that superb quality of playful and energetic animation for almost all of it. I really liked Rite Of Spring the best mostly because I never seen dinosaurs and lava drawn this beautifully. Even for 1940, this is a true work of art even if I don't find it a masterpiece.
8.5/10

Pinocchio (1940)
This one is really good. For the 2nd movie ever made by Disney this is absolutely masterful for it's time. It also has some really relatable characters like Jiminy Cricket, he's hilarious and I also liked Honest John's voice. For an animated movie aimed to all audiences, this can get challenging sometimes and some of the parts like the bit with the donkeys actually gave me the chills, but in a good way. Some of the moments in here are kinda not watchable in my taste, and I wished the whale scene was alot more quicker and intense but this is absolutely brilliant and well told from start to finish.
9/10
3
Bambi (1942)
In terms of backgrounds and levels of calmness this is probably the best movie to watch in the disney canon. I thought this movie was going to be mid before I watched it but after watching it, it was really heartwarming and cute to the point that I couldn't stop thinking about this film. I loved the story. Bambi growing up and learning how to be alive and face the most intense out in nature. For the most part while I was watching, this film felt similar to The Lion King (1994). They pretty much have the same ending too. I do have to say Bambi is a little better, but I don't really want to say Lion King did it worse since both movies are classics. This has stunning music, calm and peaceful visuals and I thought the skunk, Flower was hilarious and the best moments in the movie.
9.5/10
2
Dumbo (1941)
A really watchable and underrated classic by Disney. I would assume some people say that this is their least favorite from the era but to me it's one of their best. I really like how this movie feels more shorter than the others yet it tells a very cute and inspiring story. To me this felt like Pinocchio but way more structured. I thought Timothy Q Mouse was really nice and helpful, yet he's serious towards Dumbo's enemies. He's becoming one of my favorite characters and the songs for the most part are really good especially the final bit with the crows singing. Yeah, people say that the crows in this movie are offensive but I thought they were funny and full of spirit. This one is near close to becoming a masterpiece and I definitely had a good time watching this one.
9.5/10
And finally the best golden age disney movie is...
1
Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (1937)
What can I say? It's Snow White. I thought this film was absolutely charming, timeless and really iconic for alot of reasons. Some people say this is a bit dated, but for me, NO.... I admire this film so much. The seven dwarfs are not only hilarious and have so much personality, but they were also helpful and smart that they helped Snow White become less alone and guided. This movie isn't just a stereotypical guy and girl movie, it's more than that. Also the fakeout death wasn't meant to be pointless since the story said otherwise what would happen if Snow White came back alive. The prince and the queen as well were well-written and memorable. I would go all day talking about what I love about this movie because there's absolutely no flaws to it whatsoever. I'm kinda pissed off on what's happening to these characters nowadays. Disney is now remaking this classic and just by looking at the trailer, it's not awful, but it's definitely going to be pitiful for alot of audiences.
10/10
Well, I hope you liked my rankings and some people reading this might actually want to take a look at some of these movies.
After watching all 5 of these, I just wish Disney could make more 2D animated films again. It sucks that all they do nowadays is make live action versions just for the sake of money. I still think their 3D entries are solid but man it stinks that we're now living in a generation where animation studios don't care about passion and creativity as much as they used to anymore.
I really hope we see a new era where the Disney movies we get will be full of new stories and spirit. The recent one as of writing is Moana 2 which is a sequel which is kinda sad but hey maybe it was okay to some people.
Next I will be ranking all the war-time disney movies but I did see Make Mine Music (1946) was not on Disney Plus. I wonder why.
It would probably make good on my DVD collection if I buy it.
That's about it for now, I will be posting more on my blog. This year is almost closing so I will be definitely on board by then to make another post!
