Recently, I talked about the 10 worst Looney Tunes Shorts and I was proud making it. You should check it out if you haven't. Now it's officially time to talk about my 10 best Looney Tunes shorts. Reason is, is that I watched every Looney Tunes short in the classic era (1929-1969) and of course I was obsessed with this cartoon series.
You'll be expecting to see this fresh lookin' duck in the shorts mentioned.
Some of these shorts are underrated, guilty pleasures of mine, for example Coal Black And The Sebben Dwarfs, which will not be on my list. It's a really fantastic film that isn't really that offensive for being a Censored 11 Short honestly.
Anyways, let's get into the Top 10. This time it's more pleasent than my worst list.
10
Dough Ray Me-Ow (1948)
What a fantastic cartoon and one of Art Davis's best cartoons easily. He makes some awesome stuff and this is just silly good fun. Heathcliff and Louie are amazing one-shot characters that deserve another cartoon. The gags and voices are hilarious including the part with the birthday cake. Highly recommend you watching it. It's easy to watch and kinda forgotten.
9
Operation: Rabbit (1952)
Personally, not all of Chuck Jones's cartoons are highly watchable, but this one sure is. I love everything Wile E Coyote and Bugs Bunny related except for Hare-Breadth Hurry (1963), that short was not very good. Bugs Bunny's expressions are by far the best thing about it and the Coyote's voice adds to the charm to his character the best. I love this one, I never get sick of it.
8
Book Revue (1946)
You saw this coming. This is of course a classic. It's pure energy no other animator can master. Bob Clampett was a true genius. I love the celebrity apperances in this and also the wolf is really expressive and such an interesting character. If you think this cartoon is boring, your on a whole level of being wrong. This cartoon is too good for how fast paced and lively it is.
7
Show Biz Bugs (1957)
This is by far one of the best Bugs and Daffy team-ups since the hunting trilogy. I love when two characters are interacting with each other and playing these acts in a theater, it reminds me of the charm of the road to films (Road To Rio) and (Road To Bali). I love Daffy's short temper in this one, and Bugs is all chill. It's a cartoon I haven't gave enough credit, but it's good enough for it to be on the list.
6
The Windblown Hare (1949)
One of Bugs Bunny's best cartoons in my opinion. What I love about McKimson's cartoons is that the characters can be sometimes jerks and get what they deserve at times yet it fits the overall feel of the comedy. The pigs in particular are literally villains but I somewhat love it. The animation is so expressive, and I always have a passion for fairy tale parody cartoons. Classic Disney, Tex Avery and Looney Tunes made some hilarious cartoons about them.
5
Katnip Kollege (1938)
Yes. This is considered to be an underrated cartoon. The shorts I talked about at least have more than a 7 or 7.5/10, this has a mixed rating of 6/10 on IMDB and yeah that's not alot. But I don't think I should dislike all films that have lower ratings. I love this cartoon alot, I even loved it when I first seen it. The music is so groovy and the cats all look cool. Johnny Cat and Kitty Bright are gold in particular, and I love how they are playing music in the night. The nighttime aesthetic is always one of my favorites.
4
Drip-Along Daffy (1951)
Whats Opera Doc, get outta here! That cartoon is too overrated, this cartoon is Chuck Jones's magnum-opus. It's too hilarious, it's literally a meme of itself at the start. Nasty Canasta is an amazing villain in Looney Tunes and the expressions are too good I could draw them. I'm not too keen on westerns, but this is too good it fits Looney Tunes really well.
3
Awful Orphan (1949)
Yes. This is another Chuck Jones one. I literally made a mistake on my part with Drip-Along Daffy, but this one is rarely talked about, it's too enjoyable, Charlie Dog is one of my favorite Looney Tunes characters. Go on and hate me, he's extremely hilarious, and Porky Pig is too relatable. Porky Pig is my favorite characters. He feels like I'm based off of him. His personality is literally me in public situations. I love him. I would highly recommend you watching one of these Porky and Charlie Dog cartoons.
2
Kitty Kornered (1946)
What can I say? It's Kitty Kornered! I talk about it almost every post I make so far, the cat's designs are impeccable, the zany animation adds to the charm to the cartoon, and it doesn't matter if it needs a story, it's too insane for it's own good and is literally an influence on my drawing career.
And now for the honorable mentions.
1. What's Up Doc? (1950)
I love this cartoon. This is one of Bugs Bunny's best performances, I also love the pie scenes with Bugs Bunny and Elmer. If you haven't watched this cartoon, you haven't got into full coverage of what Bugs Bunny's character feels like. I'm not kidding. I know there's over 100 Bugs Bunny classic shorts but it's a cartoon I think should get more recognition than something like What's Opera Doc.
2. Duck Amuck (1953)
This cartoon is too perfect. Not to make it on my Top 10, but I would say Top 20 at best. It's one of my favorite cartoon concepts, the character vs the artist. Everything in this film is memorable for alot of reasons.
3. Coal Black And The Sebben Dwarfs (1943)
I mentioned this at the beginning of this post, I think this cartoon is Bob Clampett at his best. The animation is at its highest effort and the music in particular is really fun. I don't want to watch it all the time but I actually realized when making this, Bob Clampett didn't make this cartoon to be harsh with black people, he simply made it for a passion of black jazz culture, and the controversial gags and designs weren't trying to be uncomforting to the audience. I feel that for other Censored 11 cartoons like Goldilocks And The Jivin' Bears and Uncle Tom's Bungalow. They are extremely guilty pleasures of mine.
And now for Number 1...
1 🏆
The Great Piggy Bank Robbery (1946)
This was one of my favorite Looney Tunes cartoons for a long time and it still is to this day, it's one of my favorite cartoons in the classic era ever. Daffy Duck is too good in this cartoon and everything is colorful, zany, and rubbery, this is how to make a cartoon. I love the villains, the nighttime backgrounds, and the ending is absolutely funny. Red Hot Riding Hood (1943) and this cartoon The Great Piggy Bank Robbery (1946) are there for being my favorite films.
Hopefully you enjoyed my opinions. This was far more pleasent to make than my worst list. You can tell these cartoons look way more better and there's iconic characters like Bugs and Porky.
Well, that's all folks!
