What's Entertaining and What Isn't

There's alot to expect in the world we call Earth. But in that world is entertainment and tastes.

I want to talk about what's appealing and what's the most tedious, and uninteresting.

Let's start with types of films I tend to enjoy.

Animation wise, I'm obsessed with cartoon character cartoons.

I think what makes cartoon characters, specially the classics, really interesting is that animators used these characters to act in a society similar to ours, and express themselves in wacky ways. I mean they are drawings, they can do whatever they want.

Y'know what really ticks me off?

Abstract animated films.

I watched An Optical Poem about a week ago, and it was alright, nothing special but something I guess. Maybe moving circles isn't my thing, but it's got some good music.

This looks like it came from my nightmares. All those offensive patterns and dots facing right at you. Yuck.

I have to talk about my favorite cartoon characters. Let's start with Daffy Duck, mostly the 40s zany version of him.

The Great Piggy Bank Robbery is one of my favorite cartoons, everything about it is entertaining, I never get sick of watching it.

You can tell that at the start of the cartoon, it's breathtaking and allows you to relax and look at the gorgeous scenery until the fun begins with the lively character on screen.

Another cartoon is Daffy Doodles where we have a narrator issuing all the chaos surrounding Daffy painting mustaches on all the ads, and the dialogue to the character adds it's charm.

Now let me describe a character that made me yawn the most. It's the most lacking classic cartoon character in existence.

Pink Panther is a character with no soul. There is nothing gaining excitement about him whatsoever. People love him and I just don't understand why. If he had any involvement in your childhood or anything like that, I get it, but to me this character feels like a cash-in on classic Looney Tunes but without the flavor.

There's barely any talking which is a real let down to this character design because I think his design is memorable but I barely get a good laugh or smile when I see this animal on screen.

Tom and Jerry may have silent characteristics but at least they have more spirit and the energy is at it's highest degree, and there is care with the plots of the shorts.

Another character I don't seem to like is Casper The Friendly Ghost. He's supposed to be the villain of the cartoons since the people are frightened about him. But he really isn't. He has no emotion when he reacts to it. And even then the plots in some of his cartoons are really basic.

I remember watching a short on the Harveytoons DVD I got on my birthday and I thought that it was exhausting to watch.

I think it's probably because Casper's personality wasn't that interesting to me.

Him being nice and helpful just doesn't sound that exciting.

Also these guys are on the same level as the others. If there was another world to cartoons, it would be a series of Coyote catching other animals instead of the same thing for 50 cartoons.

Now I want to talk about magazines/books etc.

Magazine covers nowadays focus on having a ton of words on it to make the person see the latest trends.

I don't love it because I tend it to be average, not too much detail but not too minimalistic either.

My favorite types of magazines are the old fashioned ones, mostly the Saturday Evening Posts or the artwork of Norman Rockwell.

The paintings are all amazing and the fact that you could get to see these covers every week back when these were made, feels exciting.

Books

When it comes to covers, I have to admit, I need to see a good looking picture on it in order to know where I'm getting at.

I'm at an age where I'm fully grown to more meaningful stories but I don't think I'm going anywhere with this sh*t. This stuff is just jumbled. I hate when they might go abstract with the story because it rarely makes sense and leaves you in confusion.

It's not funny or interesting it's just weird and a waste of time.

I'm more drawn to books that have a simple story, appropriate amount of pages and decently made characters. Little Golden Books is a huge example of that.

I love me some comics, I really like how well drawn they can be at times, but there's some I don't really see myself liking.

Something like Calvin and Hobbes may have really interesting drawings but the speech bubbles are too in your face. Calvin is just saying a bunch of fantasy. It's like a "who cares!" type of character, he says the most useless things ever.

This stuff is the absolute worst. Look at all of these useless words. I except to see this in modern sitcoms and it being more interesting.

The comics I enjoy the most are the ones made in the late 1890s to the early 1920s, probably late 1910s at best.

These were popular and a really good way to laugh and experience art and creativity in a new light when these were first made.

These were amusing. I love how they are fully drawn than today where it's all digital and copied.

Classic Animation talents have been inspired by these comic artists.

The characters also have interesting personalities and feel alive, instead of them being completely robotic and nondescriptive.

Lastly for now... I want to talk about color palettes.

Colors are the best thing to ever exist. It expresses ourselves just like with drawing and fashion, heck even nature loves it.

It's good to use this type of scenery in film.

When it comes to cartoon backgrounds, I don't seem to like it except for the classic cartoons.

This is not my type of color palette. It's hard on the eyes, it's too distracting and makes you feel restless.

It's what I call Anti-Color where none of these colors were made for a reason. But to be bright and over-saturated as possible.

I get that little kids want something bright and cheerful, but it doesn't have to be this overly shiny.

Having an average look in nature is far more real to experience than those dead moving animal characters trillions of people watch on YouTube.

(This is what I mean, GROSS!)

You can see how much thought and care went into scenery that it's a work of art.
