When I think of what the best Donald Duck cartoons have to offer, the 30s cartoons especially the ones directed by Jack King are my favorites.
What I love about these is that the animation can be so unreal, you wouldn't know what's going on without being too confused. It's also probably because these had way more impact than in his later cartoons where he fights off with Chip and Dale and those can get repetitive.
I think my favorite Donald Duck cartoon is Donald's Ostrich (1937) mostly because of how zany, and funny it really is.
First of all, really awesome looking title card.
The first thing we get to see happening that's good is Donald listening to a radio and his head stretches out. Those types of animation movements have been a staple in Disney cartoons since the mid 30s and I was always inspired by it.
We get to see the actual ostrich, and it is so cute.
We get an underrated kissing bit in this.
I love the Ostrich's running cycle.
Just then, she finds some balloons and eats the heck out of a concertina (which I never heard that instrument before)
There's alot of funny gags surrounding the ostrich's eating habits. While eating the balloons, they pop which is clever.
Next we get some really good animated close-up shots of Donald Duck and him finding ideas.
The tuba scene is one of my favorite moments in this cartoon. I love this part so much.
Donald blows the tuba and then he actually gets stuck inside.
I could've imagined back then in 1937, how people would react to this particular scene.
I can see someone in the theatre laughing their ass off.
These Donald Duck cartoons were The Warner Bros. and MGM of the late 30s. And that makes total sense. Since back then the slapstick and animation were impeccable.
Donald is still messing around with the ostrich, I mean he does this for like 7 minutes but we still get good animation like with Donald flapping his hands which is what I always wanted to do with my cartoon characters.
When I first watched this cartoon, I wasn't too keen on being too familiar with other cartoons that compare but here when the ostrich runs between walls reminds me of Swing Shift Cinderella which came out 8 years later.
After coming back to this one, I really like the simple plots of these. A character being absolutely frustrated and has to stop a immature animal. I'm willing to make cartoons like that.
There's this deleted scene I just researched on YouTube of a gag that was somewhat deleted before it even went to theaters. I have no idea why they got rid of it.
Donald designs this disguise of Frankenstein and I'll admit it, the design of it looks really cute.
